Ten Things They Don't Tell You When you Get a Guide Dog.

It's been thirteen years now since I was partnered with my first guide dog.  His name was Leif and he passed away on the 3rd Februuary 2026.  He was 13 years and eeleven months old.  About average for a black Labrador Retriever.

I had been paired with Humboldt my second guide dog in September 2025.  We just celebrated our one year anniversary together.

So I have now accumulated more of a decade of experience of guide dog handling and have recently posted a YouTube vlog talking about some of the things that somehow got missed with all of the application forms and the general fuss of learning to work with a guide dog.

This is not to say that guide dogs have a problem.

It's just that people forget to tell you a few things about the relationship.

Mostly good but sometimes life is likely to throw you a curve ball.

So no more ado.
